October
Unreal its October already, what happened to the summer, didn’t Pastor Russ just leave on Sabbatical and look it as of October 1st Pastor has been back 31 days. We had wonderful fill-in Pastors while Pastor Russ was gone, but it sure is fantastic to have him back, there really isn’t anybody else like Pastor Russ and have you noticed, he came back with quite a bit of spunk in him.
Well anyway enough about Pastor Russ and back to October. October has a lot of good things going for it, like I love it when the air has that crispness in the mornings, the leaves on the trees are turning beautiful colors, pumpkins and squash are in abundance, mums shower us with their striking beauty, the geese are flying overhead, you start to get that hibernating feeling because you know snow is in your future, comfort foods like stew and soups I hunger for and the best of all October is the month of my birthday.
So you see there are a lot of great things about October, but there is one thing lurking out there ready to strike – HALLOWEEN, my thought is let’s just pass over that day like it was never there. I guess it’s not so much Halloween that I don’t like, but what’s associated with it WITCHES.
Yes, I fear witches more than you can ever imagine, and if any time around Halloween night there happens also to be a full moon, I am petrified. I will not read a book with witches in it, I hate witch costumes, I will not watch a movie with witches in, and let me tell you I did watch the Wizard of Oz and we really shouldn’t let our kids watch such stuff. I have this crazy idea that they (who ever they are) will swoop me up cover me with snakes and use me for one of their crazy rituals, yes your ministries coordinator is weird!
I asked Pastor Russ if there are witches in the bible and the only one he could remember was the one in 1 Samuel 28, Saul and the Witch of Endor, but when I read the chapter, that witch wasn’t anything like the witches I have dreamed up in my head. It’s funny the things we are afraid of and how we let our imaginations run wild to make those fears become bigger than they are.
There are so many different fears out there and they can consume us to the point of overtaking our life, fear can make us question who we can or cannot trust, and fear can suck the happiness right out of our hearts. When your fears have taken you to a point that you can’t control them anymore, its time, time to give them to Jesus and let Him deal with them. Isaiah 41: 10, 13 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, “fear not, I will help you.”
